What it is

MBA's weekly survey of mortgage applications at the lenders it samples, for purchases and refinancings.

The weekly change in the market, purchase and refinance indexes, and the average contract rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage. MBA publishes the figures.

Why it matters

Refinancing and purchase demand respond within days to mortgage rates, so it is the most frequent read on housing demand.
